Habitats Alongside Homes
This week we are celebrating all things new homes.
New homes week is a great time to talk about the importance of biodiversity and creating various habitats for the neighbouring wildlife alongside crafting eco-friendly homes.
At our most sustainable community, Church Farm, we want everyone to feel at home, so we created a bug house for local insects to enjoy in the garden of our show home.
The community will include almost three acres of wildflower meadows to help eco-systems thrive and our show home flowerbeds are an example of this, as opposed to traditional landscaping.
Wildflower seeds are an important food source to insects and small mammals and provide shelter and food for important pollinators, including bees.
Speaking of bees… we share Green and Blue’s belief that new homes should equally provide shelter for wildlife, that’s why we incorporate their bee bricks into the homes across our communities. A simple way to do something to help our declining bee population.
These bricks are an ideal and stylish habitat for non-swarming solitary bees such as red mason and leafcutter bees, amongst other cavity-nesting species. Solitary bees are fascinating to watch and make for friendly neighbours as they have no queen or honey to protect, meaning they are non-aggressive and won't sting.

Alongside measures to protect pollinators, we’ve also chosen to include bird and bat boxes in the brickwork, carved hedgehog highways and introduced badger tunnels to enable these animals to find shelter and travel safely through the community.
All of the above, along with 25% of the development being attributed to multi-functional green space, careful planting of native trees and plants and the inclusion of an attenuation pond, result in a higher-than-average biodiversity net-gain. These components paired with the modern eco-friendly homes and the vibrant community, make up the future-proofed paradise that is Church Farm.
