The Mews
The Mews is the name of one of our unique apartments, perfect for your first home or those simply hoping to find the 'right size' with a private entrance and ample space, it's low-maintenance living to enjoy at Welborne Garden Village.
The term 'mews' has French origins from the word 'muer' meaning 'to moult'. This initially referred to the place where royal hawks were kept in their moulting season, during the 14th century during the reign of King Richard II, the king kept his birds in his 'mews' during their moulting season as it was thought they were not suitable for hunting.
A short time after this, the building that is said to have housed these birds was converted into stables by Henry VIII, who transformed it into stables for horses, changing its primary use. The word ‘mews’ then began to refer to rows or streets of houses built on former stable and carriage house sites, maintaining a historical connection to their origins and ever since, the name remained.
Both Richard II and Henry VIII have a strong connection to Hampshire, with the former having built his palace within the grounds of Portchester castle, close to the location of Welborne Garden Village.
Having had multiple uses, whether for keeping birds, horses or carriages, historically Mews houses often feature a distinctive architectural style and have become highly desirable properties, offering a sense of privacy, generous space, and historical charm.
With a rich history, The Mews style home makes an ideal place for you to move.
